This refers to the article, “Islam’s enemy within” (Coffee Break, May 25) by Mr Kanchan Gupta. Although the Jamia Millia Islamia has now become a Central university from a minority institution, its academic atmosphere is still filled with Muslim issues. It is perhaps the only place where one finds a number of staunch Muslims subscribing to Marxism. It may be because of this kind of environment that Jamia scholars believe in conspiracy theories and other fanciful ideas like a Christian and/or Jewish hand behind 9/11.

If madarsas are to be blamed for producing Islamists, then universities like Jamia Millia and Aligarh Muslim University should be held responsible for producing apologists of Islamism. These apologists try their best to defend radical Islamism by presenting half-truths, fabricated theories and historical revisionism in their lectures, books and discussions. They also try to portray Muslims as victims of the global war on terrorism, but never blame pan-Islamic movements across the world, especially in Jammu & Kashmir.

The tragedy with Muslims is that their leaders have kept them in the dark. The community is either unaware of the atrocities committed in the name of Islam or does not want to admit the truth. Muslim and Marxist historians have purposefully practised negationism to distort Indian history.

There is no place for nationalism and democracy in an ideal which visualises an Islamic state. According to the tenets of Islam, a Muslim is supposed to be a Muslim first and an Indian second. Similarly, if shari’ah is not enforced in a state, then that place is Dar-ul Harb, the abode of war.
