Needed, a Nepal policy

This refers to the editorial, "Dealing with Nepal" (May 23). India, for the past five decades, has taken its relations with Nepal for granted. Till recently, Nepal was the only Hindu kingdom in the world. Many Indian Hindus used to take pride in the identity of the Himalayan state. But today, as a democracy, Nepal has become a base for Islamists to carry out terrorist activities on Indian soil. The Maoists of Nepal have contacts with their Indian counterparts. Both Islamists and Communists have one objective: Destruction and division of India.
-
India was supposed to protect the monarchy in Nepal. Instead, the Government of India practised its post-independence policy of passive non-interference. The Maoist takeover in Nepal will jeopardise India's national security.
-
We have always thought that Nepal needs us more than we do. This attitude needs to change. The Maoist Government will exploit Nepal's strategic location between India and China. This will reduce India's dominance in the region.
